Tax Obligations in Mexico: What You Need to Know

Federal Taxpayer Registry (RFC):

Every company operating in Mexico must be registered with the RFC, which allows the Tax Administration Service (SAT) to identify and track your tax activities.

Tax Withholding

If your company contracts services or purchases goods from third parties, you may be required to withhold and remit taxes on behalf of those third parties. This includes withholding VAT and ISR, among others.

Provisional Payments

Throughout the year, companies must make provisional payments of ISR, based on their accumulated income. These payments are made monthly and are an advance on the annual tax.

Monthly and Annual Tax Returns

Companies in Mexico are required to file monthly tax returns, including Value Added Tax (VAT) and Income Tax (ISR). Additionally, an annual return summarizing all the operations of the fiscal year is required.

Electronic Invoicing (CFDI)

Mexico has one of the most advanced electronic invoicing systems in the world. All income and expenses must be documented through Digital Tax Receipts via Internet (CFDI), ensuring transparency and control by the SAT.

Provisional Payments

Depending on the size and characteristics of your company, you may be required to undergo a tax audit. This involves the review of your financial statements and tax returns by a certified public accountant.
